The Madras High Court :
The Madras High Court on Friday warned IPS officer G. Sampath Kumar of dismissing his case to restrain the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from conducting Indian Premier League (IPL) matches, without putting in place precautionary measures to prevent betting and match-fixing, if no one appears on behalf of him during the next hearing.
When the public interest litigation (PIL) petition filed by Mr. Kumar in 2018 was listed before the first Division Bench of Chief Justice S.V. Gangapurwala and Justice P.D. Audikesavalu, senior counsel P.R. Raman, representing the IPL franchisee Chennai Super Kings (CSK), said the case filed by the IPS officer was vexatious and unnecessary.
Madras HC to hear MS Dhoni’s contempt of court plea against IPS officer

The Advocate General of Tamil Nadu, R. Shanmugasundaram, has reportedly granted the 41-year-old permission to move his case petition. The Advocate General granted permission to MS Dhoni after it was agreed that the remarks made by Sampath Kumar amounted to scandalising court proceedings.
The betting and match-fixing bombshell was dropped back in 2014, which saw many players from Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals banned along with the franchises for the IPL 2016 and 2017 seasons.
After obtaining consent from Advocate General R Shanmugasundaram on July 18 this year to file the contempt application, Dhoni preferred the present contempt application on October 11 this year to punish Sampath Kumar for his alleged action of making remarks against the judiciary in violation of the court’s interim order passed in 2014.
